Commitment to Dare to Lead
Participation and success rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students have improved markedly over the past few decades, but on several key indicators literacy levels and secondary completion rates for example, they are still well behind the rates for the rest of the population. Whatever their circumstances, Indigenous young people's well-being increasingly depends on access to and success at mainstream education and what it provides.

Dare to Lead schools commit to improving the educational outcomes of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and also to ensuring that all their students develop an informed understanding of Australia's Indigenous people and their cultures, and of the importance of the reconciliation process.

Schools with Indigenous enrolments

Members with Indigenous students enrolled will make a formal commitment, over a period of three years to achieve:

  • in the case of primary schools, a 10 or more percent improvement in literacy performance levels at Year 5 (as defined through conventional testing procedures)
  • in the case of secondary schools, a 10 or more percent improvement in completion rates of recognised Year 12 courses (including embedded VET modules and courses).

These targets reflect central issues in school achievement, but it is anticipated that many other desirable goals will be achieved through this process.

Schools with no Indigenous enrolments

Member schools without Indigenous students enrolled will make a formal commitment to:

  • audit and, where necessary, revise their academic curricula and other school programs with a view to ensuring that all their students develop an informed understanding of Australia's Indigenous peoples and their cultures, and of the importance of the reconciliation process
  • actively promote contact between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, and especially among students with their peers, and
  • support the work and directions of the Coalition in other relevant ways. We anticipate that the nature of these tasks will evolve over time and that a richer bank of experience will provide many concrete examples of opportunities (school exchanges, scholarships, mentoring and so on) for members to consider implementing.
