Over 75 years ago, Reginald Murray Williams AO, CMG
began to make bush saddlery and boots while camped in South Australia's
remote Gammon Ranges. Here, R.M. first met "Dollar Mick" Smith, an
itinerant saddler, and after much trial and error, fashioned his first
pair of stockman's riding boots. Since these early beginnings, the
company has developed a world-wide reputation as a quality maker of
boots and accessories.
Dare to Lead schools in the northern suburbs of Adelaide are partnering with the RM Williams
factory in Adelaide to access many opportunities for work based
learning, enterprises, cultural learning and eventual employment of
Indigenous young people in the factory for those who take that option.
There is a strong commitment to a program of cultural awareness for
management staff at the factory, and to the development of a mentor for
Aboriginal employees.
A partnership is being explored between 'The Rocks' retail outlet and a metropolitan Dare to Lead school in developing cultural installations through learning projects which involve retail staff and students from the school.
Boots for Palm Island A simple and practical partnership between RM Williams and a school on Palm Island has provided riding gear for horse-loving students. The drive for boots, apparel and riding track was boosted by a significant personal donation by a South Australian small businessman. For more on this story click here.
