NEW MATERIALS FOR SCHOOL LEADERS COMING SOON |
With Term 2 well underway in most states and territories (regardless of vacation placement!), schools' implementation of their 2011 plans, including their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education action plans, will be unfolding. But how does a school know how it is tracking with its plans? For some schools, it will involve a collegial Snapshot where Dare to Lead assists with an unobstrusive review; for others, it could involve a school self-assessment using the School Review Checklist which can be downloaded from the Dare to Lead website. A new Checklist will be available on the website within the next few weeks. Soon, check the tab on the homepage to download the updated resource.
National Reconciliation Week In what way is your school acknowledging National Reconciliation Week which runs from May 27 until June 3? Take a look at the Reconciliation Australia website for practical ways to become involved, including at this part of the site, Learning Tools www.reconciliation.org.au/home/get-involved/learning-tools
EXCELLENCE AWARDS ANNOUNCED |
We extend our hearty congratulations to the recipients of the 2010 Dare to Lead Excellence in Leadership in Indigenous Education Awards which were announced by The Hon. Peter Garrett AM, MP - Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth at an event at Parliament House in Canberra on Monday 2nd May 2011.
Broome Senior High School (WA) received a High Achievement Award for it's 'culture of success' strategy which has resulted in much-increased completion rates.
Rokeby Primary School (TAS) also received a High Achievement Award, in this case for its increase in community involvement and resultant student outcomes.
Each of these schools was presented with its citation and a cheque for $6000 to continue their strong work with their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
Four schools were acknowledged with an Achievement Award, namely Cairns West State School (QLD), Erskine Park High School (NSW), Ngunnawal Primary School (ACT) and One Arm Point Remote Community School (WA). These are also demonstrating considerable success with their student outcomes as evidenced by their strategic approach and their clear data.
The stories of these six schools will be available on the website from the last week of May. See the home page 'Latest News' tab, www.daretolead.edu.au
DARE TO LEAD STEERING COMMITTEE |
Our project is truly privileged to receive guidance and support from such an eminent group of Indigenous educators as those on our Steering Committee. New to the Committee is Dr. Ngiare Brown who works in the medical faculty at the University of Sydney and has a wide community involvement. Phill Nean will also join the Committee in his role as representing the Senior Education Officer of the various state jurisdictions; Phill works with the Department of Education in the ACT; Ngiare and Phill join Professor Jeannie Herbert (CSU), Dr. Mark Rose (Deakin University), Professor Peter Buckskin (University of South Australia), Dyonne Anderson (National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Principals Association) and Gina Archer who represents the various Indigenous Education Consultative Bodies.
Leaving the Steering Committee as representative of the Senior Officers' Group is Associate Professor Robert Somerville AM who is a long-time friend and supporter of Dare to Lead. Over the history of the project, Bob's contribution cannot be understated. He has been an outstanding and untiring voice for Dare to Lead and his practical advice and on-the-ground perspective has been invaluable to our development and focus. Our warm regards and sincere thanks to you, Bob.
