AEWs MEET AT NYANGATJATJARA COLLEGE

In late August 2010, Dare to Lead and MindMatters held a joint event at Nyangatjatjara College in Yulara. This event brought together Anangu Education Workers from the communities served by Nyangatjatjara College (Yulara, Docker River, Imanpa, Mutitjulu) and the APY Lands. This was another example of the commonalities between central Australian communities in the TriState region being far more important than state/territory borders.

The purpose of this meeting was to examine and learn about the Keeping Them Safe resources which have been developed by Anangu educators from the APY Lands. The audience for the workshop was Indigenous educators who can train in and deliver this program in schools, key senior community figures who can support this process, and any teachers interested in developing an understanding to support the implementation of the program in their schools.

Prior to the meeting, the Traditional Owners stated that they want:
  • Better educational outcomes amongst our young people
  • More community involvement in Anangu Schools
  • Anangu teaching wellbeing in schools
  • Anangu Leading Health and Wellbeing in the Community
For each goal, there was discussion about:
  • What we want to achieve
  • Ideas/Things we can try
  • What support do we need?
  • Who can help us?
Also discussed was what needs to happen to increase:
  • People's confidence
  • Knowledge and skills
  • Anangu leadership of health and wellbeing
The AEWs will meet again in early December 2010 for a second workshop.

"Nyangatjatjara College believes that providing ongoing training for our AEWs is extremely important," Nyangatjatjara College principal Chris Harvey says. "For example, our AEWs will work at Areyonga School in November to look at writing and publishing books in Pitjantjatjara suitable for use in schools."
