EAST KALGOORLIE PRIMARY SCHOOL, WA

SCHOOL:
East Kalgoorlie Primary School is a Government K-7 school on the outskirts of Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields region of Western Australia. Of the school's approximately 70 students, all but three are Indigenous. The school's population is extremely transient, with only eight students continuously enrolled from the start of 2006 to the end of 2008.

PROGRAMS:
Deadly and Smart. The Deadly and Smart ethos values students' cultural identity and challenges them to ensure their behaviour reflects that ethos. It has been a critical component in changing the school culture to one that is safe, supportive and inclusive. It has included the commission of a local Aboriginal Studies school curriculum and a whole-school focus on Aboriginal Studies in term 3. The values of Deadly and Smart are reinforced at daily assemblies. Deadly and Smart stickers, wrist bands and visual aids have been developed.

East Kalgoorlie Alphabet Resources. Photos of students and local landmarks were used to make a meaningful alphabet resource. These helped aid student understanding of sound and letter relationships, and were produced as flip cards, A4 sound charts, desk stickers and playing cards for home and school environments and an alphabet book.

Supporting students. Because most of the school's families are living in poverty the school provides:
  • Breakfast
  • Fruit
  • Lunch
  • Bus to and from school
