MELROSE HIGH SCHOOL, ACT An Indigenous Studies Centre enhances Indigenous student outcomes and provides a focus for cultural learning and Reconciliation.

SCHOOL: Melrose High School is a Year 7-10 Government school in the Australian Capital Territory. Of its 820 students, 15 are Indigenous.
PROGRAMS: In 2005 the school developed the Indigenous Studies Centre (ISC) as a dedicated space for Indigenous students. The school fully funded the role of ISC Coordinator, indicating the importance attached to the project. The ISC provides support to all Indigenous students in improving literacy and numeracy skills as well as assisting them to complete class work, homework tasks and assignments. It is also used as a drop-in centre for students to receive pastoral care and a focal point for Indigenous families.
It was developed to increase the attendance level of Indigenous students; improve engagement; encourage leadership skills of Indigenous students; and increase community participation. It also enhances cultural and historical understanding within the whole school community through targeted programs delivered by students and adult members of the Indigenous community. One example of this is Weapons and Tools, a 40-minute workshop presented by Indigenous students at various occasions.

COMMUNITY COMMENT: "Melrose High School is leading high schools in the ACT with the role they play in raising education levels for Indigenous kids. The Indigenous Studies Centre room is packed with work from the students; is often used for meetings with parents; students can access it for support to complete work; is a place to proudly show visitors to the school; and as well is a place where the kids can hang out. It has helped many Indigenous students gain their year 10 certificate as well as assisting Indigenous students in all years to complete necessary assignments, provide support and assist with excursions etc." - Dianne Collins, parent
